On January 21, the documentary “Great Nation Construction” Season IV, Episode 1, “Urban Renewal,” aired on CCTV’s financial channel (CCTV-2). Thanks to the proactive promotion and planning by the Party Committee Propaganda Department of China Metallurgical Group Corporation (MCC), the Group’s underground “dragon” – the Hengqin Utility Tunnel Project – made a remarkable appearance in the program. This showcased the Group’s comprehensive strength in urban infrastructure construction and vividly demonstrated MCC’s ability to leverage its full industrial chain advantages in construction to tap into the robust pulse of China’s economy. The exposure further elevated the corporate brand image and social influence of MCC.
A decade to create a mountain, fifteen years to build a city – what was once a small fishing village has transformed into a world-class bay area metropolis. The Hengqin Underground Utility Tunnel is a technological marvel forged beneath the earth. Faced with the challenges of complex geology, it employs innovative techniques and advanced technologies, resembling an invisible technological fortress that runs like an underground chord through Hengqin Island. By “accommodating all utility lines within the smallest possible land footprint,” it has saved over 400,000 square meters of land for Hengqin, allowing more possibilities to flourish above ground.
The 33.4-kilometer Hengqin Utility Tunnel, constructed by China MCC20 Group Corp., Ltd., integrates six types of municipal pipelines, including power supply, telecommunications, water supply, reclaimed water, cooling supply, and a vacuum waste collection system. As China’s first and most comprehensively designed underground utility tunnel at the time, it successfully addressed urban issues such as “frequent road excavations” and “overhead cable clutter”. This project pioneered domestic construction technologies and standards for underground utility tunnels, setting an exemplary model for urban utility tunnel development in China. It has been honored with numerous prestigious awards, including the National Golden Cup Demonstration Project for Municipal Engineering, the China Installation Star Award, the 2017 Luban Prize, and the 2019 Zhan Tianyou Award. Notably, it is the first and only utility tunnel project in China to receive both the Luban Prize and the Zhan Tianyou Award, making it a landmark achievement in the field.
“Great Nation Construction” is a large-scale documentary series produced by the Finance Program Center of China Central Television. The fourth season, themed “Urban Underground Lifelines,” narrates the philosophy and practices of China’s urban development that emphasize both above-ground and underground infrastructure. It vividly presents the exploration and achievements in the construction of these “foundation” projects. The program highlights underground engineering in China’s urban renewal, with the Hengqin Underground Utility Tunnel Project as a prime example. As a “pioneer” in the field of underground utility tunnels, China MCC20 Group Corporation will continue to uphold its ingenuity and meticulous craftsmanship. The company is committed to exploring and delving deeper into the optimization and upgrading of utility tunnel construction technologies, striving to create utility tunnel projects with higher safety standards, stronger operational efficiency, and deeper intelligent integration.
